This easy, 9-ingredient honey jalapeño chicken & broccoli dinner comes together so quickly and packs major flavor.

It tastes just like your favorite Chinese takeout but is made only with ingredients your body will love!

This dinner is perfect by itself, or served over rice or cauliflower rice! It totally satisfies my craving for Chinese takeout but I love knowing all of the ingredients in this dish whole-foods and healthy for my body. You don’t have to compromise the flavor you love with feeling good!

Prepping the Chicken and Broccoli

The first step is to prep the chicken. If you get really thick chicken breasts, in order to get it really thin, , it’s you may want to pound a chicken breast with a meat mallet (or the back of a pan) until it’s 1/4 inch thick. This not only allows you to get thin slices, but also tenderizes the meat.

I typically just cut 3-4 slices lengthwise into the chicken breast, creating long strips, which I then slice individually into diagonal slices.

Get a large pan, I used my cast-iron, hot on medium and heat 1-2 tbsp avocado oil. Add the chicken to the pan, being sure not to crowd it. You will probably have to do multiple rounds of cooking off the chicken. It will only need about 3-4 minutes per side, and flip when it’s nice and brown on each side. When it’s cooked, set aside on a plate and work through the rest of the chicken.

After the chicken has been cooked, add the cut broccoli to the pan with another tbsp of oil and sauté for a few minutes. It will continue to cook in the next step with the sauce, so you really only want to “halfway” cook it.

When the broccoli is half-cooked, add the chicken back to the pan and now it’s time for the honey jalapeño sauce!

Honey Jalapeño Sauce

The wonderful thing about this honey jalapeño sauce is that it can easily be adjusted to suit you & your family’s taste. If you prefer more spice, add more of the jalapeño seeds or less honey. The way I’ve prepared it in this recipe is only very mildly-spicy, I’m confident even kiddos could handle it!

Begin to prepare the sauce by mincing 1 whole jalapeño, again, keep the seeds if you want spice, 3 garlic cloves, 1 tbsp fresh ginger (or 1 tsp ground ginger, but fresh is best!). To the bowl, add 1 cup vegetable or chicken broth, 1/4 cup coconut aminos (you can sub soy sauce, just be careful of the salt), 1 tbsp arrowroot and 1 tbsp raw honey. Whisk together until well combined.

The tapioca flour in this recipe is used to create that delicious, thick sauce that makes me think of takeout. You can most definitely sub tapioca flour with cornstarch or arrowroot, they will all do the same thing. It’s definitely key to this recipe!

Add the sauce to the pan with the chicken and broccoli, and sauté for about 3 minutes on LOW until the sauce thickens. If you feel like the sauce is getting too thick, feel free to add a bit more broth until you reach your desired consistency. Now you’re ready to eat!
